entrepreneurship
The Mehtimäki testing station for well-being and
exercise – creating new business, services and
entrepreneurship development project boldly
seeks growth by creating a new kind of platform for
sports business, learning and research. The project
is responsible for promoting the growth of
companies and creating new jobs by creating a
platform for exercise and well-being that enables
the creation of new services and business
opportunities. The platform also enables the
creation of research-oriented businesses and
student-oriented innovation activities. The
platform creates a multidisciplinary research and
learning environment for the fields of exercise and
well-being. The activity is physically located at
Joensuu Areena. The implementation of the
development project is supported by an
investment project that is part of the project
package. The city of Joensuu, the Sports Institute of
Eastern Finland (ISLO), Karelia University of Applied
Sciences and the University of Eastern Finland are
the implementers of the project. The project
operates 1.10.2023-31.12.2025. The total budget
of the development project is €1,208,583, of which
€966,868 is funded by the Just Transition Fund
(JTF). The investment project's budget is €964,758
in total, of which €675,331 is funded by the Just
Transition Fund (JTF). Karelia University of Applied
Sciences and the University of Eastern Finland are
responsible for the investments.

Objectives
The goal of the Mehtimäki testing station for well-
being and exercise - new business, services and
entrepreneurship is to implement a provincial and
multidisciplinary platform for sports business,
learning and research that serves the needs of a
wide target group.

exercise and well-being platform that enables the
emergence of new exercise businesses, innovations
and well-being services -
Create an environment and a "functional well-being
platform" where: -
students, micro and SME entrepreneurs are able
to offer and develop their services -
multi-professional expertise meets and creates
innovations. R&D activities are accelerated and
cooperation and coordination between actors in
the welfare sector is intensified -
the regional expertise of special physical
education is strengthened -
To create a new type of multi-professional learning
environment that strengthens the cooperation of
educational organizations and promotes the
attractiveness of education -
Develops research-oriented innovation activities in
exercise and well-being, especially in the area of
expertise in photonics -
Develops an operating model that enables smooth
multidisciplinary cooperation and optimal
utilization of facilities -
Develop an operating model where, through the
development of mobile services and various
remote and hybrid solutions, it is possible to
support sports and wellness services and expertise
throughout the North Karelia region.
